Formed in collaboration with the core police services of southern Alberta, the Police Cadet Training program delivers up-to-date training for Lethbridge Police Service, Taber Police Service, Blood Tribe Police Service, Grande Prairie Police Service, Manitoba First Nations Police Service, Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City.

Why should you study Police Cadet Training at Lethbridge Polytechnic?

You are a newly hired police officer with a designated Lethbridge Polytechnic police service partner. Before you begin policing alongside your field training officer, you will complete our Police Cadet Training program. You’ll be awarded a Certificate in Police Cadet Training after graduation and be ready to begin work in your community, with your newly acquired knowledge. Graduates of the police cadet program receive 42 credits into the Criminal Justice - Policing diploma.

Admission Requirements

Flexible – Fall, Winter, or Spring term depending on police agency requirements.

Academic Requirements

All admission requirements are stipulated by the hiring police service or sponsoring related agency.

Non-Academic Requirements

Applicants are required to undergo a pre-screening process prior to application. Results of all required testing will be reviewed by the applicable Police Chief to determine eligibility for the program. The pre-screening process may include the following requirements:

  • Minimum age 18 at time of application
  • Must be Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Must hold valid driver’s license with maximum of 5 demerits
  • No criminal conviction for which a pardon has not been granted
  • Completion of medical examination indicating applicant is fit for police duty
  • Proof of completion (no older than 6 months) of A-PREP or PARE fitness testing to required standard for police officers in Alberta
  • Must complete vision and hearing testing with scores that meet or exceed the minimum requirement for Alberta policing agencies
  • Must provide proof of Standard First Aid and CPR certification valid at time of application and for duration of training program
  • Completion of Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search with no findings of guilt
  • Proof of achieving a score of 70% or better on Alberta Police Cognitive Abilities Test (APCAT)
  • Proof of achieving a score of 55% or better on Alberta Communications Test (ACT)
  • Satisfactory completion of behavioural descriptive interview
  • Satisfactory completion of full background check
  • Three letters of reference, not from family members
  • Successful completion of police psychological testing
  • Successful completion of polygraph interview based on content of Personal Disclosure form
Graduation

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students are awarded a Police Cadet Training certificate.

Criminal Justice - Policing

Graduates of Lethbridge Polytechnic's Police Cadet Training program, starting in 2017 or later, are eligible to receive 42 credits (14 courses) towards Lethbridge Polytechnic's Criminal Justice - Policing Diploma. Delivery Formats

This program is delivered in-person at Lethbridge Police Services, with some on-campus training, or in the town of the partnering police service. 

On Campus

This program is delivered in a face-to-face format on the main Lethbridge Polytechnic campus. Lectures, labs and hands-on training opportunities will all take place on campus in Lethbridge.
