With Alberta’s population now topping four million residents, the demand for skilled trades people has never been greater. If you are good at building and repairing items of all shapes and sizes and want to help make the economy of the province and country run smoothly, then look to one of Lethbridge Polytechnic’s apprenticeship and trades training programs.

 

Consider Apprenticeships and Trades if you:

Apprenticeships 

Apprenticeship programs involve eight to 12 weeks of classroom training per year. 

To enter one of Lethbridge Polytechnic’s apprenticeship training programs: 

  1. Find the right trade for you.
  2. Apply online at tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca – start by creating a SIAMS Account. You will need your ASN – Alberta Student Number.
  3. Once your application is approved, register for courses through mytradesecrets.gov.ab.ca. 

Pre-Employment Trades Training

The Pre-Employment Trades Training program is specifically designed to help you become an apprentice by preparing you to write the first-year apprenticeship theory and practical exams without the need to be currently employed in the trade.

Agricultural and Heavy Equipment Technician

Agricultural and Heavy Equipment Technician

ONE-YEAR CERTIFICATE

Build a successful career in agricultural and/or heavy-duty equipment repair. In 32 weeks – just two semesters – you’ll get foundational training that teaches you suspensions and powertrains, fuel systems, mobile hydraulics and everything in between. Upon completion of the program, you’ll be able to write apprenticeship exams for the first two years of Agricultural Equipment Technician or Heavy Equipment Technician.

Requirements: Grade 11 English (20-1 or 20-2) and Grade 11 Math (20-1 or 20-2)

FOUR-YEAR APPRENTICESHIP

Learn to diagnose, repair and complete preventive maintenance on automotive vehicles and light trucks. Your training will give you the confidence to advise customers on work to be performed, general vehicle condition and repair requirements.

As a student in this program, you’ll diagnose and repair a wide range of vehicles. Upon successful completion of the program, you’ll be awarded experience credit and be prepared to write first- and second-year Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship exams.

FOUR-YEAR APPRENTICESHIP

Prepare for a wide variety of jobs, from major construction projects to smaller finishing projects on residential homes. You’ll also learn how to read blueprints, calculate and select materials for layout, cut and shape materials for joining, and inspect your work.

FOUR-YEAR APPRENTICESHIP

Electricians work on maintaining, altering and repairing electrical systems that provide power, control, heat or light for numerous types of environments. You’ll use your skills for precision as you interpret mechanical drawings and electrical codes; splice, join and connect wires to form circuits; and test those circuits to ensure they’re safe.

FOUR-YEAR APPRENTICESHIP

Heavy equipment technicians maintain, overhaul and repair heavy equipment such as highway transport vehicles, construction equipment and earth-moving equipment. After you’ve written the Red Seal exam, you’ll have the option to work in a variety of different industry fields.

We’ll prepare you to work in new construction, roughing in and finishing installations; to specialize in renovations and repairs of existing plumbing; and even to install hydronic heating and chilled water systems.

Powerline Technician Apprenticeship

THREE-YEAR APPRENTICESHIP

Our three-year Powerline Technician Apprenticeship will prepare you for a hands-on career in the power industry. You’ll gain the required experience and knowledge to construct, maintain and repair electrical systems. You will spend seven week per year on campus focusing on theory and the remainder learning on the job from a qualified journeyperson.

ONE-YEAR CERTIFICATE  • SEPTEMBER ADMISSION

Experience a combination of theory and hands-on lab practice using actual wind turbine components. Safety training is provided using our own equipment and training tower, which is located on campus.
