Applications are now open for Lethbridge Polytechnic’s newest offering: a Powerline Technician Apprenticeship program launching this October.

This four-year apprenticeship consists of three years of classroom learning and a fourth year requiring additional workplace hours to reach program completion. As one of only two institutions offering this training in Alberta, this program will provide students with the essential skills and hands-on experience needed to work in Alberta’s expansive electrical utility sector. Additionally, this program covers the first two years of the Power System Electrician program, allowing students the opportunity to start this training at Lethbridge Polytechnic.

“Introducing the Powerline Technician Apprenticeship is a natural step forward following the success of our pre-employment program, which has prepared job seekers with the foundational skills to enter the industry,” says Sheldon Anderson, dean of the Centre for Trades and Technologies.

“As Alberta continues to meet the energy demands of tomorrow, we are proud to help train the next generation of skilled powerline technicians — individuals who will keep the lights on and play a vital role in our communities.”

Powerline technicians can find opportunities with local, provincial and national service providers. Work includes the maintenance of existing powerlines and servicing overhead, underground and transmission distribution systems.
