Lethbridge Polytechnic is ready to celebrate its fall graduates at Convocation this weekend.

Nearly 570 students are receiving degrees, diplomas, certificates and apprenticeship credentials this month and more than 220 of them are expected to cross the stage on Saturday.

“Convocation is truly one of the best days of the year at Lethbridge Polytechnic,” says Registrar Marko Hilgersom. “It’s a day to recognize the hard work, dedication and perseverance of our graduates, and to celebrate the support of their families, friends and instructors who helped them reach this milestone. We are proud of all our graduates, and we are excited to see what’s next for them.”

One highlight of the day will be the recognition of the fall valedictorian Mary Lou Masculino, who is graduating from the Computer Information Technology program. Originally from Victorias City, Philippines, Masculino arrived in Lethbridge in July 2023 as an international student. She had been working in IT audit and compliance prior to enrolling at the polytechnic but wanted to return to school to build stronger foundational skills.

Masculino will lead the procession of graduates and speak at the convocation ceremony.

In addition, featured graduate Alessandra Chan will receive her Practical Nurse diploma. Chan has been deeply involved in campus life during her time at the polytechnic, leading the student crew at the Simulation Hub where she found a passion for teaching and simulation-based learning, volunteering as a peer tutor and serving as president of the Nursing Students Club. She also worked as a student research assistant in the polytechnic’s Microbial Research Laboratory exploring the antibacterial properties of local plants. Following graduation, Chan will be working at Red Deer Regional Hospital where she looks forward to continuing her commitment to patient-centred care. She has also set her sights on medical school to further her impact in health care and education.

The Fall Convocation ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. It will also be livestreamed at lethpolytech.ca/convocation.
