Taking a look back on a momentous year for Lethbridge Polytechnic, here are a few of our favourite stories from the past 12 months – featuring foundational changes to incredible stories of heroism and competition. This year was one for the record books.

10. Lethbridge Polytechnic Students’ Association, Massage Therapy program feeding hungry students
The Lethbridge Polytechnic Students’ Association (LPSA) partnered with the Massage Therapy Clinic on campus to offer massages to the public in exchange for grocery store and restaurant gift cards to help feed hungry students. In November, the LPSA also fed 300 students a day for a week with a variety of meals. See the full story.

9. Provincial funding renewed for Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Lakeshore campus
Over the next three years, approximately $2.1 million will support in-person educational and training programs to individuals incarcerated at Lethbridge Correctional Centre and, by correspondence, Medicine Hat Remand Centre through Lakeshore campus. Lakeshore’s programming aims to increase students’ ability to successfully reintegrate into their community. See the full story.

8. Students make history at Hack and Seek
Lethbridge Polytechnic was proud to host around 50 high school students for Hack and Seek, a weekend-long virtual reality (VR) development competition in which students demonstrated critical thinking, logic, and communication with teammates they might have just met. See the full story.

7. Polytechnic caretakers and former student receive life-saving awards
Three Lethbridge Polytechnic caretakers and a former Corrections student received St. John Ambulance Life-saving Awards for their quick thinking and use of first-aid training to help a caretaker in medical distress. See the full story.

6. Lethbridge Polytechnic gifted eagle feather for use in student courtroom
An Indigenous eagle feather is now part of practice trial proceedings in Lethbridge Polytechnic’s courtroom. The eagle feather is part of recognizing the importance of how someone can give testimony in a Canadian courtroom, be it swearing on the Bible, a Koran, or now an eagle feather. See the full story.

5. Lethbridge Polytechnic unveils new logo
New name, same great style - Advanced Education Minister Rajan Sawhney joined students, employees and leadership of Lethbridge Polytechnic in October to reveal the institution’s new logo at a celebration. See the full story.

4. Lethbridge Polytechnic reaches new heights in college research rankings
Lethbridge Polytechnic has cracked the top 10 in the 2024 Research Infosource ranking of Canada’s top 50 research colleges for the first time. Our institution ranked 10th in the nation based on 2023 research, and we continue to build our reputation as a leader in applied research. See the full story .


3. College apprentices shine at Skills Canada competition
Two Polytechnic students who showed their skills won silver medals at this year’s Skills Canada competition from May 29 to June 1 in Quebec City. Congratulations to Kylar Bloomberg (second year – Plumber Apprentice) and Jaylon Koehn (third year – Welder Apprentice) for their hard work and dedication. See the full story.

2. Lethbridge Polytechnic to offer new Primary Care Paramedic, General Arts and Science, and Trades certificates
With a breadth of new programs offered to complement our redesignation, Lethbridge Polytechnic now provides its own Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) program, in addition to new certificates for Pre-Powerline Technician, Pre-Carpenter, Pre-Electrician, Pre-Pipe Trades and Pre-Welder certificates, and three new one-year certificate programs within the General Arts and Science, General Arts and Science (Science Pathway) and General Arts and Science (Kinesiology). 1. Lethbridge College to become Alberta’s newest polytechnic
A foundational change – the next step in Lethbridge College’s storied 67-year history saw it transition to Lethbridge Polytechnic. The designation change was granted through an order-in-council on June 20. See the full story.
