Andrew Dunlop, director of applied research operations, Centre for Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Lethbridge College is announcing two new directors in its Centre for Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CARIE) and its Facilities Management departments.

Andrew Dunlop is the new director of applied research operations for CARIE. He comes to the college from Northwestern Polytechnic, where he was in roles including the associate vice-president of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence and Applied Research, and the dean of Applied Science and Technology. Prior to that, he was an administrator at the University of Saskatchewan and a faculty member at the University of Manitoba. Dunlop has a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from the University of Manitoba, a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Geography and a PhD in Agricultural Spatial History, both from the University of Saskatchewan.

Dunlop says it was an easy decision to join Lethbridge College, because he has been working closely with the college for several years within the Alberta applied research and innovation ecosystem, so he understands and supports the trajectory of applied research at the college.

“Lethbridge College has built something very special with its applied research initiatives, and I am thrilled to be given the chance to be a part of it,” says Dunlop. “CARIE has a fantastic, talented team, and I want to work alongside them to support a growing range of applied research initiatives. As much as has already been built here, there are still many opportunities to grow facilities, research teams, create new initiatives, and provide applied research services to broader sectors and industry partners. I want to help however I can in continuing the great work everyone has done to build the applied research portfolio into one that is getting a lot of well-deserved recognition within and beyond Alberta.”

Wim Chalmet, director, Facilities Management.

Wim Chalmet has joined the college as the new director of Facilities Management. He comes to Lethbridge College from the University of Lethbridge where he worked as the director of Operations and Maintenance in the Facilities department. Prior to the university, he worked for Iunctus Geomatics (now Planet Labs) as the lead for satellite observations and was the liaison for talking to SPOT, the French satellite program that obtains Earth imagery for commercial use including agriculture, forestry, geology, water resources and geographic information systems.

Chalmet is quickly familiarizing himself with the college and his department, saying his focus for the coming years will be on sustainability.

“I see a large shift to sustainability over the next five years and I think the college already supports this quite actively,” says Chalmet. “We want to be aware of what we consume, while showcasing the work we’re doing. I want to give the younger generations coming to Lethbridge College something to be proud of when they see our focus on sustainability.”

“We are very excited to have Andrew and Wim join Lethbridge College,” says Lethbridge College President and CEO Dr. Brad Donaldson. “Both offer an incredible wealth of knowledge and expertise in their respective fields. Any time you bring on new employees it’s a great opportunity to learn and grow as an institution. They will be great additions and we look forward to their contributions.”
