Interested in software design? This session’s for you
Chris Rabl, the lead front-end engineer from Autovance Technologies, will visit Lethbridge College to talk to students about software development. Autovance is a Lethbridge-based tech company that created a web-based tool for automobile dealerships for the benefit of dealers and the experience of their customers. The talk’s title, “The universe only exists to torment software development,” suggests this will be a lighthearted look at software development, of interest to anyone who has been frustrated by building or using software. This session is open to all, especially Information Technology and Business students, and will be held in IB1145.

Come see our newly renovated library
Please join Lethbridge College as we celebrate the grand reopening of our Buchanan Library. The recently renovated space offers our students more spaces for group work, quiet study and accessing resources, including our 3D printers and the entire Centre for Teaching, Learning and Innovation team. And in keeping with the college’s recognition of the Blackfoot Territory, the learning commons will have its own Blackfoot name. There will be an official announcement and brief program at 10 a.m. in Centre Core, before a series of showcases inside the newly renovated space starting at 11 a.m. Here’s what you can see:

Lethbridge College Practical Nurse students explore poverty
Lethbridge College students in the Practical Nurse program will be participating in a poverty simulation, facilitated by the United Way of Lethbridge and South Western Alberta. The simulation, involving about a dozen volunteers from campus, will see about 90 students encounter a range of obstacles and challenges involved in navigating a month in the life of a family living in poverty. Volunteers will serve as business owners, police officers, service providers, government employees and more, and participants will have to make difficult choices about where and how to spend their limited resources. While this type of simulation has been held at the college before, this is the first time Practical Nurse students have participated in this empathy-building exercise. The simulation runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium, with a debrief to follow to about 1 p.m. Media interested in covering this story and hearing from students must make arrangements in advance as this is a class project.

Signature event focuses on red meat industry
The 21st annual Tiffin Conference, a one-of-a-kind event for discussing issues and trends in the red meat industry, will be held at the Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge. More than 350 agricultural producers, students and industry experts are expected. Highlights of this year’s conference include Mike Davis of the Davis Auto Group Ltd. presenting on family business and succession planning; Al Mussell, founder of Agri-Food Economic Systems, Inc., on the economics of beef production and the impact of trade and politics; Jeffrey Fitzpatrick-Stilwell, senior manager of North America Sustainability with McDonald’s on why the restaurant chain is committed to Canadian producers; and more. The Tiffin Conference is made possible through the Ronald Tiffin Agricultural Endowment Fund, which was established in honour of Ronald W. Tiffin and is administered by Lethbridge College.

Volleyball action returns to the Val Matteotti Gymnasium
Lethbridge College Kodiaks volleyball action returns to the Val Matteotti Gymnasium for the first time since late November. The Kodiaks will take on the Olds College Broncos. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m., the men at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, youth and Lethbridge College alumni, $4 for college staff and free for LC students.
