One of Lethbridge College’s best programs for students looking for flexibility and transferability has a new name that better reflects the way it meets the needs of learners. Starting July 1, the General Studies program will be known as General Arts and Science, a change that represents the core skills ingrained in a program that has long been a popular entry point into post-secondary education for students.

“This name change represents the way we deliver relevant and high-quality education to students,” says Dr. Samantha Lenci, Provost and Vice President Academic. “The General Arts and Science program provides highly-transferable skills that prepare students to either enter the workforce or further their education – here at Lethbridge College, or at universities and colleges around the world. It’s an excellent starting point for students who want to spread their educational wings and acquire a broad education in the arts and sciences.”

The two-year General Arts and Science diploma program provides students with a diverse mix of courses that allows them to pursue a major in the area that interests them most. About 95 per cent of classes are transferable to other college and university courses in Alberta, in Canada and around the world.

The program is especially popular among southern Alberta students, who are able to begin their post-secondary education close to home. The ease of course transfers might be especially appealing to students unsure about where and how to embark on their post-secondary education given recent changes made in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

“The change of name to ‘General Arts and Science’ is more descriptive of the diploma content in terms of the program and courses offered, and the underpinning liberal arts and sciences philosophy,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, Dean of the Centre for Applied Arts and Sciences. “It reinforces the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature of the diploma, and it further enhances the potential for university transfer. The name change will make it more obvious to potential students that the diploma offers a wide-ranging curriculum in liberal arts and sciences, while maintaining a connection with the reputation and recognition of the existing qualification.”

Applications for General Arts and Science for the Fall 2020 intake are open now. Those interested in learning more about the program can live chat with a representative or read more information at lethpolytech.ca.

The program name change officially goes into effect on July 1.
