Lethbridge College wants to ensure new students are ready to hit the ground running when classes begin next week. So, beginning Sunday, those new to Lethbridge College have three full days of New Student Orientation options to get them ready for the upcoming academic year.
More than 2,400 new students are expected at Lethbridge College for the Fall semester and more than 1,100 have already registered for New Student Orientation events.
“This weekend will be a full team approach,” says Shelley Carter-Rose, Dean of the Centre for Student Affairs. “This is a chance to embrace our students and give them a full weekend of family orientations, workshops for students and welcoming activities. This is an opportunity for us to really set the stage and invite our students to become part of our community.”
All new students are expected to attend New Student Orientation on Tuesday morning. The day begins with all new students gathered in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium at 9 a.m. for a morning of live music, welcomes from college and Lethbridge College Students’ Association (LCSA) representatives, and an introduction to successful student habits.
Students will then break off into their program areas to meet their instructors and classmates, and learn about what to expect in their year ahead. All new students are then invited to a free BBQ lunch hosted by the LCSA and have the option to take campus tours throughout the afternoon.
Over the Labour Day weekend, students and their families can get a jump-start on the new year, as many campus services – including registration, admission, advising, financial services, the bookstore and more – will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. Residence move-in takes place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday and between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday.
Students can also attend pre-arrival workshops on Sunday and Monday that cover a range of topics from learning about technology, to how to take care of their health and wellness, to how to adopt strong study habits. Recognizing that family members play a key role in the success of students, a family orientation at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday will allow family members to meet the Dean of their students’ academic centre and take a campus walking tour.
“It’s important to stress these services extend well beyond this weekend,” says Carter-Rose. “We’ve worked on equipping our faculty with resources to help students, so if students feel like they need anything, all they need to do is ask. We have a full suite of resources to support them and their success.”
Many of the weekend sessions require pre-registration. A full list of everything happening on campus and the opportunity to register is available on the Lethbridge College website.
A welcome breakfast for trades and apprenticeship students was held on Monday, Aug. 26, as classes for those students are already underway.
