Creating inspired, meaningful designs is only half of the challenge once media graduates enter the workforce. An annual competition, run in partnership with Tecconnect, challenges Lethbridge College students to think about the art of the pitch as they try to get local entrepreneurs to buy into their creative vision.
The third annual Tecconnect Challenge takes place on Wednesday, Feb. 14, as students from the college’s Multimedia Production program and Digital Communications and Media program will split up into five teams and be allotted resources at Tecconnect. Each group will have just five hours to brainstorm and design marketing materials for OnSITE AUTO, owned by Lethbridge College alumnus Guillermo Aceytuno (Business Administration 2017). Aceytuno, is experienced in the field of pitching ideas, having won the 2017 Chinook Entrepreneur Challenge.
“This competition helps to mimic the realities of the new media industry,” says Tanya Weder, Lethbridge College Multimedia Production instructor. “The students will have to realize what Guillermo needs for his business, create examples of those pieces in a limited time and then sell him on their vision. It’s an excellent, real-world learning experience.”
Teams will have to design a logo update for OnSITE AUTO, along with supporting materials that could include motion graphics, animation, TV or radio commercials, social media accounts, virtual reality applications and more. Working collaboratively, the teams will need to create material and perfect their presentations in just five hours before pitching their ideas to a panel of local entrepreneurs and business development professionals.
The Tecconnect centre for entrepreneurship and innovation is a vibrant place for entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses within a supportive and innovative environment. It’s a space and community that encourages the development of new ideas that transform industries and shape the future.
“We are pleased to be part of a hands-on learning experience that connects students with entrepreneurs, creating an opportunity to put theory into practice while also receiving in-person feedback and insights,” says Renae Barlow, Economic Development Lethbridge VP of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. "This project is a tangible example of how Tecconnect works collaboratively with the community to enhance the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Lethbridge.”
Lethbridge College students will take part in the competition at Tecconnect (3582 30 St. N.) on Wednesday. The design phase will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and presentations to the panel will start at 2 p.m.
