Lethbridge College celebrates the end of another successful academic year at its Convocation ceremony on Friday. The 61st Convocation in Lethbridge College history begins at 1 p.m. at the Enmax Centre.

More than 1,520 convocates will receive degrees, diplomas or certificates from Lethbridge College this year, with more than 660 of them expected to cross the stage on Friday. The ceremony will also feature the awarding of an honorary degree to the college’s Kainai Kaahsinnoonik (Grandparent) Peter Weasel Moccasin.

The Convocation ceremony is just one of many Lethbridge College events taking place this week in conjunction with the end of the 2017-18 academic year.


Indigenous Honour Night

5 p.m., Tuesday, April 24 – Garden Court Restaurant

This event gives Indigenous convocates the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments with fellow classmates, family members and community members. As students embark on their pursuit of further academic and career goals, this evening also provides an opportunity for convocates to express thanks to their families as well as the services and agencies that have assisted in their educational journey.


Southwest Regional Skills Competition

7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 25 – Lethbridge College campusHigh school students from across southern Alberta will be on the Lethbridge College campus to take part in skills competitions ranging from cabinet making and welding to baking and video production. This event is a partnership between the college, Career Transitions and Skills Canada Alberta. Winners advance to the provincial competition. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. The day concludes with an awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.


surRENDER: Interior Design Technology Showcase

4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 25 – Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility

Interior Design Technology students will share their outside-the-box thinking and showcase how they use virtual reality to bring spaces to life for clients. This drop-in event allows attendees to enjoy appetizers, meet students, instructors and industry professionals, and see for themselves the limitless opportunities of virtual reality technology. The winner of the inaugural Ashcroft Design Challenge will also be announced.


Merging Realities: An Event of Multiple Perspectives

9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Thursday, April 26 – Instructional Building Theatres

Lethbridge College and the VR/AR Association have organized the world’s first full-day virtual reality and augmented reality conference being held completely in virtual reality. Keynote speakers include Alex Katzen, a content specialist on Google’s Daydream business development team; Alan Smithson, CEO of MetaVRse and the entrepreneur who invented and brought to market the SmithsonMartin Emulator DJ System; and Cathy Hackl, author of Marketing New Realities: An Introduction to VR & AR Marketing, Branding and Communications. Following the full-day conference, an in-person VR mixer will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lethbridge College.


Honouring Excellence

5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 27 – Garden Court Restaurant

This annual event recognizes honorary degree recipient Peter Weasel Moccasin, along with Alumni Award recipients Kathy Veres Sassa (Distinguished Alumni), Barbara Duckworth Thompson (Career Virtuoso), Chelsey De Groot (Community Leader) and Cornelius Mans (Rising Star).
