After guiding his team to a second-consecutive undefeated regular season and an ACAC championship, Lethbridge College women’s basketball coach Brad Karren has been named Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) coach of the year.

Karren received the award on Wednesday in Edmonton, where the Kodiaks are preparing to for the CCAA national championships, beginning today.

“It’s great to get this award,” says Karren. “I am really lucky to have such good players because they are the ones that make me look good.”

This season, the Kodiaks went a perfect 21-0 in regular season play, before winning three straight games in the ACAC championships, by an average of more than 34 points, to win the conference title. Karren was named ACAC south division coach of the year for the seventh time in his illustrious career. This is his second time winning the CCAA honour, after earning it previously in 2008-09.

“We’re proud of what Brad and his team have accomplished this season,” says Todd Caughlin, manager of Kodiaks Athletics. “Brad has prepared his team to live for this experience and they have stepped up and performed. This type of honour and recognition is proof of that commitment.”

Karren is in his second stint as Kodiaks head coach, having spent 14 seasons with the team. In three seasons since returning to the program, he has compiled a 72-3 record in ACAC competition, winning two ACAC championships and a CCAA silver medal.
