Four of Lethbridge College’s most exciting, technologically-savvy and hands-on programs will have their work come to life during this week’s annual Collide-O-Scope event.

Encompass is the theme of the 2017 event, as guests will get an up-close look at Lethbridge College’s students’ work and have the chance to participate in a variety of creative challenges. This year, faculty and students from the School of Media and Design will transform the Garden Court Restaurant into a mix of virtual and real-world spaces that can be explored. An augmented reality portfolio session will allow those in attendance to use their smart phones to bring students’ work – including videos, 3D models, graphic designs, websites and more – to life. They will also have the chance to try out a custom-made virtual reality game created by Multimedia Production students.

That environment will showcase the way students are learning to have an impact on a wide-range of industries after their graduation.

“Virtual reality is certainly one area where industries related to our programs are growing, and the college is pleased to be leading this transformation,” says Vicki Hegedus, chair of the School of Media and Design. “In celebration of that, this year’s student game will take place in virtual reality, with a contest that emphasizes communication, which is very important in all four industries associated with the School of Media and Design. It should be a really fun night.”

Collide-O-Scope is a unique, high-energy collaborative fundraiser, with all money raised going towards student awards within the School of Media and Design. One-of-a-kind items and creations will be available for purchase through a silent auction. Thanks to the generosity of the event supporters, Lethbridge College has been fortunate to create eight student awards for its programs that will be announced during the event. People are also encouraged to contribute directly to student awards through a GoFundMe page.

After initially debuting at the college decades ago as a fashion show, the Collide-O-Scope name was adopted in 2010 and has now evolved into a rich, interactive experience featuring four programs: Digital Communications and Media, Fashion Design and Sustainable Production, Interior Design Technology and Multimedia Production.

Collide-O-Scope 2017 takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Garden Court Restaurant at Lethbridge College.
