Lethbridge College has been awarded a Post Secondary Institutes Project grant of $10,600 by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) to create a mural depicting the rich heritage of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) culture.
“Lethbridge College is situated on traditional Blackfoot territory and is adjacent to two First Nation reserves with growing populations,” says Robin Little Bear, Sooyikayaaki, Lethbridge College FNMI manager. “We’re proud to take on this mural project as it reflects a welcoming atmosphere to our FNMI students and acknowledges the value we place on their education as well as enhances our cultural diversity within the community.”
Lethbridge College recognizes the importance of intertwining tradition with educational and career goals for its FNMI students. Learners have access to personal, cultural, academic and career counselling from experienced and dedicated FNMI professionals. The college also has a dedicated student lounge and study area: the Piita Pawanii Learning Centre. Lethbridge College will celebrate FNMI Days Oct. 18-20 this year.
The mural is in the planning stages with the Elders of the FNMI cultural support program and an unveiling date has yet to be announced. Upon completion, it will be displayed in the front entrance of the college.
