Flexible learning options are available at Lethbridge Polytechnic. Use this guide to learn more about the terms and delivery methods you may see this year.
Any content delivered in our flexible model will provide the same curriculum requirements as classroom-based learning.
The flexible learning environment at Lethbridge Polytechnic includes a variety of teaching methods:
- on campus
- blended
- online
- Hyflex
Here are some of terms you'll see as we describe delivery methods:
Blended – A blended course is intentionally designed to include continuum of both face to face/on-campus and online delivery. This includes both synchronous (in real-time on a set schedule) and asynchronous learning strategies (learning that does not occur at the same time or same place). Communication, instruction and assessment components of a blended course provide consistent information but go further by enhancing and supplementing each other. Students may complete some of their lessons online and may also be required to come to campus.
Online – Online courses are instructor led. Communications, teaching and assessment components are delivered solely online, and do not have any on-campus elements. They are taught through a learning management system and may be either synchronous (in real-time on a set schedule) or asynchronous (learning that does not occur at the same time or same place). Students complete all their work online and are not required to come to campus.
On Campus – On-campus courses are connected to a learning management system. However, the primary means of delivery is in a synchronous (on a set schedule), face to face classroom. Students will complete the majority, or all, of their work on-campus.
Asynchronous – Learning does not occur at the same time or same place. Instructor provides materials including online readings, recorded lectures or presentations, posted lecture notes, video content, assignments and exams for online completion. Students access the course materials within a flexible timeframe prescribed by the instructor.
Synchronous – Learning happens in real time. Student and instructors interact and engage with each other in a specific virtual space, through a specific online medium, at a specific time. This can include video conferencing, live chatting, and live-streaming lectures.
Experiential learning elements – This is the application of theory and academic content to real-world experiences – the what and how to do things. This can be done in a classroom, within the community, within a workplace environment or the virtual classroom. Examples could include group work, participation in class debates, mock trials, role-plays, lab experiments and creating prototypes. Experiential learning happens when students engage in an activity related to the roles they will fill as graduates and also through reflection.
Hyflex – All lectures for this program occur in a digital environment while labs are divided into face-to-face and online learning cohorts. Face-to-face labs are delivered through video conference to online learning cohorts. (AAT, IDT, VR Programs only)
The polytechnic's Information Technology Services department has put together a comprehensive list of the technology requirements you need to learn remotely. You can access the list here.
Check Canvas, our learning management system, by signing in with your Lethbridge Polytechnic email and password, for details on how to access your virtual classroom for each course, and your polytechnic email account for detailed instructions from your instructor. Remember, if your class is being offered online synchronously you should be logging in at that specific time in order to attend the class in real time with your classmates and instructor.
If you encounter study permit restrictions, other significant barriers due to the pandemic or feel apprehensive about returning to campus, we are here to help. We’d love to have you join our community and encourage you to contact us at admissions@lethpolytech.ca to discuss your options.
Study abroad opportunities are currently suspended. Visit our International Experiences page for more information and updates.

You can view program requirements by navigating to your chosen program’s page here.

- Open studies: You can register for credit courses without applying to a designated program of study by registering as an open studies student. Certain conditions apply. Learn more here.
- Pathways to advanced learning: Accessing laddering opportunities into advanced credentials ensures that your admission requirements for the next level program are met. Contact an academic advisor for more information on this admission route.
- Home-school: Applicants who completed their province’s Ministry of Education approved high school curriculum with their final grades reported to their provincial Ministry of Education can apply using their transcripts. Home-schooled applicants whose grades were not officially reported may complete English and/or Math testing to meet admission requirements.

Yes! Stop by to visit our Pride Lounge and get involved with our LPSA LGBTQ + club.
Lethbridge Polytechnic’s LPSA/LGBTQ+ is an important resource for polytechnic students who may identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or any of the other diverse identities that make up our community. We offer educational programming and access to resources of interest, as well as a physical space for students and staff to meet and socialize with each other. As advocates for gender and sexual diversity, we are committed to providing LGBTQ+ students a safe and supportive campus, absent of discrimination, where the expression of one’s gender and sexual identity is welcomed and respected.
Our LGBTQ+ Club is a student initiative that focuses on creating a fun and safe place and hosts social events. All students who identify as LGBTQ+ and allies are welcome to join in at any time. Questions about the club or an activity? Feel free to drop by the Pride Lounge in AN1717 for more information.
Lethbridge Polytechnic is committed to fostering an environment of inclusiveness and supporting students' preferred form of self-identification. Our faculty and staff members understand that allowing individuals the freedom to define their own identity, including the way in which they would like others to refer to them, is a vital component of respecting an individual’s gender identity.
Your instructors want all students to feel comfortable in their classrooms, and using your preferred pronouns is one way they can signal their respect and support. We understand that it may be difficult to discuss your gender pronouns with someone new. But our instructors are approachable and appreciate knowing your preferences. We encourage you to contact your instructors before your first day of class and ask them to call you by your preferred name and pronouns.
You can also use this text as a template for sending an email to your professors if you are looking for help getting started.
Dear [instructor’s name],
My name is [preferred name], and I will be attending your course, [name of course], on [days] at [time] this [term]. My name will probably show up on your roster as [birth name], but I would prefer to go by [preferred name here] and to be referred to with [preferred] pronouns. I would appreciate it if you called me [preferred name] in class.
Thank you for your understanding, and I look forward to starting your course next week.
Sincerely,
[Preferred name]
Program cost estimates for tuition and fees are posted on every program page under the "Tuition and Fees" dropdown. We also publish a master cost estimate sheet for all programs. It may be viewed here: Program Cost Estimates.
Budget Wizard
Costs for tuition, fees, books and residence (if needed) vary depending on the program and choice of residence. Use our Budget Wizard to help estimate your costs. This is a free, self-service tool that can help you make sense of your finances and the cost of your education. With a bit of discipline and a good attitude, you’ll be able to stick to it. We suggest you then contact our Student Awards and Financial Aid office to discuss other financial questions.
Paying for your polytechnic education
Once you've used Budget Wizard to determine how much your education is going to cost, you'll want to figure out how you'll pay for it. There are a few different ways to access additional funds to help pay for your post-secondary education, including student loans, awards and scholarships, and grants. You can read more about these funding sources online.
Don’t rely on these to cover all of your expenses, though. Start preparing now by setting aside resources to help you cover the cost of your education. Then, get in touch with our Student Awards and Financial Aid office. Staff members there are experts in helping students make their polytechnic education as affordable as it can be and they can guide you through the process of applying for scholarships, grants, bursaries and student loans.
Contact Student Awards by calling 403-320-3372 or 1-800-572-0103 ext. 3372.

There are many options for paid parking and we recommend students consider how often and how long they’ll need to be on campus to determine the best value for their situation before making a non-refundable purchase. Options include:
Option 1
Purchase parking time in a student lot using a cashless option for your safety. The price is $2 for one hour; $4 for four hours; $8 for the day; $20 for one week; or $38.50 for two weeks. You can purchase time in one of three ways:
- using the HonkMobile app;
- using the tap/QR code signage being installed this summer in the front parking loop, in Lot O near the Physical Education (PE) building or in Lot B, near the Instructional Building (IB);
- or using Pay Pedestals inside College Centre, PE and IB buildings.
If you forget to use the Pay Pedestals or don't have your phone to use the app or the QR code posted in the parking lots, you can access HonkMobile at this link. Bookmark it on your browser just in case you ever need it. This will default to Lot B, but you can park in any labelled student or staff lot with purchase.
Option 2
Monthly, two-month, full-semester or full-year parking permits are available from the Lethbridge Polytechnic Bookstore. Something to consider as you compare prices: A monthly permit is $77 plus GST, or about $4 a day if you park on campus 20 days in a month. An annual permit is $392 plus GST, which is about $2.60 a day if you’re on campus all 158 school days.
Option 3
If you need to be on campus less than 45 minutes, you can park in the Front Loop if there’s space. HonkMobile rates in the loop are $1 for 15 minutes; $1.50 for 30 minutes or $2 for 45 minutes. You can't stay for more than 45 minutes in the loop which is intended for guest parking.
While you CAN apply for a government student loan up to 30 days prior to the end of your academic year if you plan to use the funds for tuition and fees you should apply as soon as the application is available. Loan processing takes up to 45 days when there are no issues and longer if there are any errors/omissions.
Students who are dependents need to apply in the province in which their parents reside. According to federal student aid guidelines, you are a dependent if you are single and have been out of high school for less than four calendar years. As a dependent student, you are expected to apply to the province in which your parents reside for student aid. Being married or having children or being 23 or older makes you ‘independent’. This is regardless of whether your parents offer you any financial support.
Alberta Student Aid has altered/added a number of policies as of July 1 2024 that may impact your eligibility. Be sure to reach out to us if you concerns about any of the following; if you have had a loan prior to this, if you have defaulted on a loan, if you have declared bankruptcy, or if you have dropped to part-time status or withdrawn.
Scholarship applications at Lethbridge Polytechnic open March 1 of each year, but you may be eligible for a bursary for financial need due to unforeseen emergencies. Contact Student Awards and Financial Aid at awards@lethpolytech.ca or by phone at 403-320-3372 or 1-800-572-0103 ext. 3372, to review your situation, discuss potential opportunities and discuss next steps.
To be considered for a bursary you must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled full-time in the study period at Lethbridge Polytechnic that you are making your request
- Be in good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA)
- Have applied for all relevant and available benefits (maximum student loans, etc)
- Demonstrate your current financial need is a direct result of unforeseeable expenses and that financial support is required to continue your studies at Lethbridge Polytechnic.
Funding is limited and completion of a bursary application does not a guarantee a student will receive any funds. Before applying for a bursary, it is highly recommended that you make a one-on-one appointment with the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office to review your current financial situation to discuss all potential opportunities and discuss next steps.
There are other options for students:
If you are an Alberta high school graduate, the application system for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship opened in August. It’s based on your average in five courses in Grade 10, 11 and 12. You can only apply and be awarded once.
The polytechnic also maintains links to many external scholarships and awards, each with their own application deadlines. Take a look.
