John Kolk is a respected agricultural leader and sustainability advocate from southern Alberta whose career has encompassed farming, environmental stewardship, and board governance. Together with his wife, Laura, he operates an irrigation and dryland farming operation near Picture Butte, Alberta, where they raised their four children and now enjoy time with their twelve grandchildren.
Kolk has earned recognition for his strong commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental innovation. On his family farm, he has implemented advanced water-management strategies, including variable-rate irrigation and subsurface drip systems, alongside conservation practices such as strip tillage, cover cropping, and manure-based soil enhancement. These efforts have improved soil organic matter, reduced resource use, and increased overall farm productivity.
Throughout the agricultural community, Kolk is well known for his leadership in research collaboration, knowledge sharing, and industry partnerships. His long-standing involvement with Farming Smarter reflects his dedication to advancing innovation, sustainability, and cross-sector cooperation in support of Alberta agriculture.
In addition to his agricultural leadership, Kolk is excited to serve as a Public Member of the Lethbridge Polytechnic Board of Governors, where he contributes valuable governance experience, strategic perspective, and a strong commitment to the long-term sustainability and prosperity of southern Alberta.
